The Criminal Investigations Division is responsible for the follow-up investigation of crimes committed against persons or property in the city.

Major Barnes oversees the Criminal Investigations Division including:

The Dunwoody Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division includes several Detectives, a Crime Scene Technician, a Crime Analyst, and a HIDTA Agent.

Detectives
The Detectives are responsible for investigating serious crimes against persons as well as property crimes, normally referred to as Part 1 crimes.  In addition, Detectives are responsible for the investigation of other crimes including credit card fraud, bad checks, and similar crimes.  Detectives are on-call to assist the Uniform Patrol Division when requested. 

Crime Scene Technician
The Crime Scene Technician is responsible for the recovery of evidence and the methodical processing of crime scenes.  This can include the use of powder and chemical techniques to recover fingerprints from evidence and restore serial numbers that have been partially obliterated.

Crime Analyst
The Crime Analyst is responsible for the identification of crime trends, series, and patterns for the deployment of resources.  In addition to in-house statistical analysis, the Dunwoody Police Department Crime Analyst also partners with Crimereports.com for real-time crime analysis information to the public. HIDTA Agent (High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas)
The HIDTA Agent is a member of the DeKalb County HIDTA Task Force. HIDTA’s mission is to improve the quality of life within DeKalb County and the Atlanta Metropolitan area by reducing the availability of and demand for illicit drugs, curtailing the attendant violent crime and illegal firearms trafficking, eliminating the profits from illegal drug related activities, and reclaiming neighborhoods from criminal control.
